Activities and facilities

Strathmore College organises a range of education and personal development trips and activities for learners to help our young people become well-rounded, confident individuals.

Education-focused activities have previously included:

  • Geography field trips (e.g. canal barge trip to Llangollen, Wales)
  • Photography trips

Some of our young people have chosen to take part in voluntary work to give back to the community and build their skills in the workplace. This has included:

  • Helping rangers clear paths at Tittesworth Reservoir
  • Volunteering at Sherratts Wood Farm
  • Helping to keep the public gardens tidy at the historic Ford Green Hall

Other activities have focussed on developing life skills, such as:

  • Visiting the supermarket
  • Going to the local library
  • Duke of Edinburgh Award

Whilst some trips are aimed at help our young people to develop their social and communication skills, for example:

  • Visiting Alton Towers
  • Trips to Harry Potter World

Specialist learning facilities

The central Strathmore College hub comprises a row of six individual units, each dedicated to a different purpose. For example, one is home to a very large design technology workshop and another contains an ILS (independent living skills) kitchen. This helps to minimise the number of learners in one place at any one time, making it easier for our young people to cope.

Our college boasts modern, well-equipped learning spaces, which have been developed with our young people’s needs in mind. Our teaching facilities are designed in such a way as to facilitate our learners’ learning and minimise any sensory issues they may have previously experienced in a mainstream setting.

Standout features include:

  • Individual tutor rooms for 1:1 work
  • Small group learning areas
  • A quiet room for learners to use if they are feeling overwhelmed
  • IT facilities in each unit
  • Flexible learning spaces with areas for group learning and individual working
  • Large DT workshop
  • ILS kitchen with cooking stations and laundry facilities

Sporting activities

Sports are a huge part of college life at Strathmore College. Learners have access to a wide range of facilities at local leisure centres and often visit to take part in a variety of activities and classes, including:

  • Aquafit
  • Badminton – links with special Olympics
  • Fitness classes
  • Gym
  • Pilates
  • Trampoline
  • Adventure sports

The Special Olympics

Strathmore College has strong links with the Special Olympics, which is the world’s largest sporting organisation for those with intellectual disabilities, providing year-round training and competitions. Many of our learners take part in competitions up and down the country and have even won a number of medals in the badminton events.
