Staff profiles

Rossendale School has a highly skilled staff team who work hard to provide the young people we support with the best possible care and education. Whilst highly qualified, our staff are also very approachable and will all, without exception, work towards ensuring that each and every pupil’s needs are fully met. Rossendale School has a very low staff turnover, meaning young people receive a continuity of care throughout their time with us.

Simon Jones, Head of Care and Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) at Rossendale School

  • 22 years’ experience working with children with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties
  • Experience working with a number of families to help build positive relationships and develop strategies to deal with their child’s needs

Teaching staff

All of the teaching staff at Rossendale School have Qualified Teacher Status and have substantial mainstream experience, having previously worked for local authority schools. In addition to their teaching qualifications, many of our teachers hold degrees related to their specialist area, for example one of our science teachers has a BSc in Marine Biology and Zoology.

Care staff

Our care staff team blends experience, qualification and youthful enthusiasm, which allows us to meet the needs of the pupils we deal with.  In addition to a degree, which many have, all care staff have completed NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care/Diploma Level 3 in Health & Social Care.  Our two care team leaders also both hold the Level 5 Diploma in Health and Social Care.

 Our experienced therapy team includes a:

  • Speech and Language Therapist
  • Sensory Occupational Therapist x2
  • Clinical Psychologist
  • CBT Therapist
  • Art Psychotherapist
  • CAMHS Counsellor

A commitment to training

Rossendale School invests heavily in regular staff training to ensure that everyone has the skills and knowledge required to deliver the best possible level of care and education to our young people. Staff undertake a range of in-house and external training, including:

  • An active core staff training programme with a clear expectation placed on staff to keep their modules up to date
  • Training in child sexual awareness
  • Training in the Prevent strategy
  • Safeguarding training
  • Autism Education Trust Level 2 training

As a school, we also maintain membership of various national bodies relating to syndromes and medical conditions which we regularly deal with e.g. NASEN, NASS, Engage etc.

Rossendale School has a number of robust safeguarding measures in place to ensure that all staff play their part in protecting our young people from abuse and neglect and promoting their welfare. These include:

  • Recognised safeguarding training for all staff at two and three-yearly intervals depending on job role
  • Designated Person training for the Head of Care (updated on a two-yearly cycle)
  • Designated Person training for the Headteacher (updated on a two-yearly cycle)
  • Designated Safer Recruitment Training for all Senior Management Team
  • An annual review of the Child Protection Policy and Procedure by the Senior Management Team

Latest guidance, not yet approved by DFE, recommends that all staff training will move to an annual basis and Rossendale is in the process of implementing this with immediate effect.

An experienced, highly committed and child-centred staff team creates a fully inclusive community where resident pupils feel safe and thrive. Two senior care staff have recently qualified at level 5, which reflects the high quality of training supported by the school.
