Residential services

Our residential provision is split across two sites within the community, around four miles away from the main school. Both, Sally Barn and The Quarter, offer accommodation for up to six young people in single bedrooms, as well as communal areas for eating, studying and relaxing. Each home is suited to pupils with slightly different needs and ages.

Outstanding residential care

Our residential provision recently received their tenth successive ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted judgement. We are very proud of this as it places us as one of just a handful of residential care provisions in England to achieve this.

The valuable role of residential care

Rossendale School offers both weekly and respite boarding provision for pupils already attending the school. This allows us to provide stability and security for the young people we support as well as to meet their wider educational, social and emotional needs. However, we feel it is important that all young people also have a home base to return to each Friday (not necessarily with their natural family). The school has a strong commitment to building effective partnerships with the young person’s family/carers so that we can work together to support their successful reintegration home.

Ofsted commented...

“The residential provision is an integral part of the school. As a result, the school is highly successful at engaging with parents. It is tenacious when working with other agencies to ensure the wellbeing of young people.”

Ofsted, October 2014

Flexible residential placements

Rossendale School has two separate residential properties, offering Monday to Thursday care, during term time only. Our residential provision has been purposely designed to offer our pupils the ultimate flexibility. We have a total of 12 beds but, over the course of a typical year, around 50% of all our pupils will have used our residential provision at some point. Some of our pupils are resident for all four nights and others just for one or two nights per week. Rossendale School is also able to offer pupils the chance to stay back for evening activities before being taken home.

We also have a pool of school vehicles, drivers and escort staff which affords us greater control and flexibility with timings of transporting students to/from school.

Helping families stay together

Whilst Rossendale School is essentially a day school, around half of our pupils will stay in one of our residential properties at some point during the school year. Our ability to provide flexible, responsive respite care helps to keep families together; providing much-needed support and crucial interventions that reduce the chance of fostering and adoption placements breaking down. Similarly, we are able to help the entire family dynamic through supporting them with respite care, often providing sufficient safeguarding for the young person to remain at home.
