Services summary

Progress School provides a highly bespoke package of education for each young person. We build an individually-tailored plan to help our students reach their academic, emotional and social potential.

A bespoke package of learning support

Our person-centred ethos shapes every aspect of life at Progress School. We do not have standard classrooms that children are expected to fit into, instead each young person has their own individual classroom designed to their specification, as well as access to group learning environments. This allows us to build a package of support, where the young person is able to learn alone or as part of a small group, according to their evolving needs. Whilst specific to the Progress School model, this structure also fits well into a typical TEACCH approach.

A high staff to pupil ratio means we can offer 1:1 support (or higher, should the young person’s needs dictate). This support is provided by teaching assistants and support workers, and is in addition to the support of a qualified teacher.

Keeping you informed

Progress School prides itself on building close relationships with parents and carers. We hold regular meetings with families on both a formal and informal basis, and are very happy to communicate with parents as frequently as required.

We take a pro-active and personalised approach to keeping parents and carers up-to-date with their child’s progress. On admission, we discuss with parents and carers how we will communicate, how often and if they prefer face-to-face, SMS, telephone or email updates.

An innovative approach to support

We take an innovative approach to the way we support the children and young people in our care. We have around 50 staff in total, working across both the school itself and our two associated children’s homes, meaning that often a young person has the same team providing their care for educational and for residential purposes, if appropriate. All students are encouraged to learn in the local community every day and we promote the use of real life opportunities to develop and consolidate learning.

Therapeutic support

The therapeutic needs of our students are of paramount importance and are prioritised in all support packages. Children are much happier and more successful in education if they are safe, able to communicate, able to regulate emotions and taught in a conducive sensory environment. Our multidisciplinary team consists of Speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, behaviour analyst and a nurse. They are highly specialised in their field and provide comprehensive assessment and intervention to support students, and to train the practitioners working with them, whilst working collaboratively with parents and external agencies to achieve the best outcomes possible.
