During the current pandemic Aspris College has remained open to students who choose to attend. We have adapted our curriculum to ensure that every student gets the best quality provision possible to suit their needs, while ensuring appropriate Covid safety measures to mitigate risk of infection.
We are running a blended learning curriculum which provides on-site lessons and therapies as well as remote learning days working from home.
According to the students’ individual needs:
- Daily or weekly contact from support staff, therapists and tutors
- Work packs delivered and collected from home
- Assessment and feedback on work completed from home
- Speech and language therapy (in person, by interactive platform or by telephone)
- Counselling (in person, by interactive platform or by telephone)
- Wellbeing and fun sessions by interactive platform for peer to peer interaction to reduce feelings of isolation
We continually assess the effectiveness of the blended learning provided, working closely with families to find the best fit for each individual student.
Safe and supportive environment
Aspris College North Wales provides a safe and supportive environment close to a mainstream college, with specialist facilities for therapy and support.
Within this environment students are encouraged to:
- Explore their own experience of Asperger Syndrome and develop strategies for managing their condition as part of their lives and work towards and increase independent living skills
- Appreciate and celebrate the value of the diversity that they bring to the college community and to society
- Develop strategies for clear communication so that staff and other students have a better understanding of their complexities
- Make informed choices regarding their lifestyle
At the end of the study programme students will have increased their potential and be better prepared to move on to the next step in their independence pathway, be that in higher education, employment, supported accommodation or independent living within the community.
Vocational training and education
The philosophy of Aspris College North Wales is based upon providing as many learning opportunities within mainstream educational settings as possible to allow choice, equality and diversity. Our young people are therefore able to benefit from successful partnership agreements with local colleges and have access to over 150 academic and vocational courses including A levels and GCSEs.
All Aspris schools and colleges aim to achieve the best possible outcomes for every young person. This is recognised by a strong record of successful exam results and positive outcomes.
Our approach is based upon individual opportunities and we aim to meet individual needs through tailored programmes of education and care. Additional support for literacy, numeracy and independent living skills can be provided where required. Work based learning, work experience and employability skills are embedded into the study programmes to help with transition and preparation for further study or employment.
Our seven core aims for children and young people summarise the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and form the basis for decisions on priorities and objectives nationally. All children and young people:
- Have a flying start in life
- Have a comprehensive range of education and learning opportunities
- Enjoy the best possible health and are free from abuse, victimisation and exploitation
- Have access to play, leisure, sporting and cultural activities
- Are listened to, treated with respect, and have their race and cultural identity recognised
- Have a safe home and a community which supports physical and emotional wellbeing
- Are not disadvantaged by poverty
