Troup House School

Welcome to Troup House School

Troup House School is a specialist day and residential school that has a strong reputation and proven track record for providing a high standard of education and care to young people between the ages of 8 to 16+ years with additional support needs including social, emotional and mental health difficulties, autistic spectrum conditions and challenging behaviour. Our young people may also experience difficulties with learning as a result of the effects of trauma, disrupted educational experiences and multiple residential placements.

Our school is located in a beautiful rural setting near Banff, Aberdeenshire, and is situated within 42 acres of woodlands which enables us to provide unique learning experiences in a safe, positive and nurturing environment. Our naturally therapeutic environment provides the ideal physical surroundings for young people to access compensatory experiences and alternative learning opportunities which form part of their Individual education and care plans. The aim of Troup House School is to take an inclusive approach to ensuring the best experiences and outcomes for our young people by supporting them to achieve the best possible social, academic and vocational outcomes.

Our service provision also includes an off-site 2 bed cottage which is located in the town of Inverurie, approximately 36 miles away. This service supports young people through care packages of support that prepare them for independent living.

We are registered as a School Care Accommodation Service with Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Education and the Care Inspectorate, and are regulated in accordance with the National Care Standards for School Care Accommodation Services.

We are committed to capitalising on learning opportunities and interventions to ensure that our young people are supported to become:

  • Successful learners
  • Confident individuals
  • Responsible citizens
  • Effective contributors

Within a safe and nurturing environment we aim to provide outcome-focused care packages that identify and meet the care and education needs of the individual young people placed within our provision.

Our young people have a complex range of needs and have often experienced trauma and neglect consequently we work hard to ensure that our care plans and individual education plans reflect and respond to individual needs and ensure the best possible outcomes. As corporate parents we have high aspirations and expectations for our young people and as a service are committed to taking a supportive approach to enabling our young people to overcome adversity. Troup House School has developed its own Action Planning Tool based on the SHANARRI Wellbeing Indicators and the Curriculum for Excellence to benchmark and track the progress of our young people.  We  are committed and motivated to ensure that our young people:

  • Feel safe
  • Are healthy
  • Are achieving
  • Feel nurtured
  • Feel active
  • Feel respected
  • Are responsible
  • Feel included
Local Authority Social Worker

“This placement has provided the young person with a high quality, nurturing, safe environment where she is able to experience new activities, and where she is well supported in all areas of her development. This has led to her developing in confidence, self-esteem and being more included in the community.

Educationally, the young person I placed has made significant progress in her education and has gone from an hour a day in an off-site education prior to placement at Troup to being fully engaged in her education with her attendance at 89%.”
