Troup House School receives praise after latest inspection...

Troup House School in Gardenstown, Banff, Aberdeenshire, has been rated "very good" or "good" in all assessment areas following its latest inspection.

In its latest report, Education Scotland, Scotland’s education watchdog, praised the school for having: “Staff who act as positive role models”; “a curriculum that supports young people to develop and learn”; and “a principal teacher who plays a strong role in improving the quality of teaching and learning”.

Troup House offers support to young people aged between 8-16 with additional support needs, arising from social, emotional and behavioural difficulties.

The inspectors described the school as a place where “young people are encouraged to maintain cooperative friendships with their peers and to try their best”. The school has an “an appropriate focus on developing literacy, numeracy and health and wellbeing across all subjects”. All young people improve significantly in key subjects following their enrolment at Troup House.

Young people develop their literacy and mathematics skills out of the classroom: they can produce material for the school’s newspaper and visit local shops to learn about how to manage personal budgets. They can take a variety of extra-curricular activities, including kayaking, skiing, mountain biking, and go on overnight camping trips.

Staff pride themselves in being excellent role models. The inspectors said: “Pupils are gaining self-confidence through respectful relationships modelled by staff across the service. The school’s governance are highly regarded by the inspection team, which described the school as “providing effective leadership with a clear vision for change and improvement”.

Operations Director David McNally reacted to the report by saying: “Everyone at Troup House is proud of the report and what we are achieving. The leadership and staff team will continue to do their utmost to ensure that we offer the best possible experiences and outcomes for our young people.”
