Specialist foster care services for asylum seeking children

Aspris Fostering Services has been providing foster care placements for unaccompanied asylum seeking children (UASC) since February 2009. Due to conflict and oppression in their own countries, we have seen a substantial increase in the number of refugee children claiming asylum in the UK in recent years.

The majority of the young people placed with us are teenagers from war-torn countries including Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq. It is likely that younger children and sibling groups from Syria may also soon be seeking foster homes in the UK.

Supporting unaccompanied asylum seeking children

We received our first UASC placement at Aspris Fostering Services seven years ago. Through expert training for our foster carers, combined with the children’s remarkable abilities to learn English, this ensured that they quickly settled in the UK and began to make good progress.

There are many potential advantages of caring for UASC children including:

  • The children can quickly develop warm relationships with their carers
  • They have often been well cared for by their own parents and are used to house rules and boundaries
  • Good school attendance and a desire to learn
  • Strong work ethic
  • The children will often keep in contact as young adults living independently within the community

Expert training for our foster carers

The main cultural differences between our foster carers and the overseas children we support are religion, language and diet. Training is provided to help our foster carers manage the child’s specific needs including:

  • Praying within the family home
  • Access to a mosque if required
  • Awareness of religious practices and celebrations
  • Special dietary requirements
